Rule of Thirds
The picture you see below is obeying the rule of thirds as the subject of the photograph, the two men working in the riverbed, are positioned at the lower left intersection of the grid. Although focus is automatically drawn to them, we are able to see the scene in which they're working by still having a wide open view of their surroundings. (edited using Adobe Photoshop 7.0)
